Fall Scheduled for October!

As I mentioned in earlier Newsletters, we have decide that it is time to pass on the opportunity to own one or both of our successful businesses (Doctor Ben's Scale Consortium & Scale Model Masterpieces). It has been an interesting experience discussing all the backgrounds of interested parties as well as the plethora of questions. For those who may be struggling to fathom how formidable each of these businesses, neither of these business are something that you can pile into a 12 foot square bedroom. Even a two-car garage would be tight quarters. I was just discussing the conversions friend and fellow business owner Pat Turner and there are a lot of folks out there who refer to themselves as "hobby manufacturers" when in reality all theses folks do is buy and re-sell finished products from the "original" manufacturers who make the products in the first place. Our finished products for each business are at least 95% created and assembled with very few outside components such as packaging, containers, raw material and some odds and ends.
Just in the past week alone we've had several inquiries for our turn-key businesses which is a huge difference from trying to create a business from scratch. If you know of someone who might be a good match, please feel free to have them contact us at 770/666-8100.
Anyway, the first day of Fall is now five days away and we are more than ready for cooler temperatures. Above is our Postal Commemorative Society complete Set of 4 framed Railroad Prints prints of by Jim Deneen... Still looking to find a new home for this extraordinary set of framed prints. I don't remember exactly when I purchased this set either in the late 1990s or early 2000. You would be surprised how many folks bought only a couple of the four individual prints and now paying a lot more than what we're asking. Anyway, have a great First Day of Fall, see you in the Hobby Room ...

Brand New! Logging Camp Portable Bunk House Kits!

Scale Model Masterpieces / Thomas A Yorke Ent. #SMM3123

HO Foot Prints: 3" x 6" & 1-1/2" x 3" (2 structures w/Details)

Not long ago we told you that we would make this kit once again available. It seems that many customers wanted to have more than just two Logging Bunk Houses for their Logging Camp. So we have bumped up the re-introduction of this kit--actually two kits since there are two Bunk Houses in this kit.

As we previously mentioned in the Logging Camp Set, we've done things just a little bit differently with the Bunk houses. Both of the Bunk Houses have windows in both the front and the rear walls instead of the original windowless front and rear walls. This was a common practice in many of the Logging Companies

PLUS! Shown in the image above, we are including a bunch of SMM Details in this kit: (2stacks) Fire Wood #5055, (2pcs-1 open/1 closed) Wooden Barrels #5048, Wood Boxes (2pcs) #5045, Wood boxes (2pcs) #5050, Hay Bales #5220 (3pcs)

Doctor Ben's Stains used for this kit: Aged Driftwood, Knotty Walnut, Antique White, Reefer White, Orbisonia Depot Green, Rail Brown, Depot Buff, Realistic Oak, and Pitch Black (if purchased with this kit Save 12%)

Logging Camp Background: Logging Camps were established at the end of the railway line to house the workers because the workers had no way of getting to and from work except by train. There were no roads out into the woods – the train provided the sole means of access. The camps were moved when the timber in the immediate vicinity of the camp was all cut. Along the Ten Mile Branch of the Union Lumber Company's (ULC) railroad, there were 42 camps ... Continued in the Instruction Booklet.

You're gonna want to order multiples of this really neat structure set and details to be announced in the next week or so.

Doctor Ben's How-To #4: "Hot Glue Casting" Booklet by Richard Bendever!   A number of years ago I was browsing through my old Gazette magazines and I picked up the January/February 1982 issue where I found an interesting article. In this long-out-of print magazine, I found an article about casting detail parts. In that article Terry Metcalfe described how he cast parts by melting beads of a thermoplastic called “Makit and Bakit” beads in RTV molds using an ordinary kitchen oven. I decided that this process was definitely NOT going to work for me.
As a former Mold Maker/Tool & Die maker, I am quite familiar with the plastic injection process...  Read More ...
