Doctor Ben's Fine Scale Nail Hole Tool (HO/N Scale)
#1492/1493
Depending upon which tool is used, this Fine Scale Nail Hole Tool will produce two nail holes per scale six inch clapboard in HO scale/three nail holes per six inch N scale clapboard or two nail holes per scale six inch clapboard in S scale/three nail holes per six inch O scale clapboard on wood, plastic, metal, or paper. Depending upon the softness or hardness of the surface and the amount of pressure applied to this Fine Scale Nail Hole Tool, will determine the depth of the scale indention into the material. Nail holes need not be so obvious that they stick out like a sore thumb. In all actuality, most nail holes in quality prototype construction do not show anyway. For the purposes of modeling, nail holes are a nice detailed touch that exhibits realism to the observer. When this Fine Scale Nail Hole Tool is properly used, tiny prick marks will result that will be hardly noticeable until some colored solution or weathering is used to enhance the effects of this tool.

NO, this isn't just "another" pounce wheel. The wheel on this HO/N Fine Scale Nailhole Tool is a hardened stainless steel that is 0.005" thick with 120 teeth. The S/O scale tool is 0.010" thick with 98 teeth--that very fine! CLICK on the thumbnail to the left for a full-size image of the HO/N Fine Scale Nailhole Tool.

YES, that's N-Scale scribed siding. We wanted our example to be tested to the most difficult level. In HO Scale, our Fine Scale Nailhole Tool makes 2 nail holes per 6" clapboard. We dare you to find a pounce wheel that has our level of detail. CLICK on the thumbnail to the left for a full-size image HO/N Fine Scale Nailhole Tool.

Instructions:
This Fine Scale Nail Hole Tool is fairly simple to use. Using a straight edge, run the wheel of the Fine Scale Nail Hole Tool along the straight edge in a pre-determined spacing. In other words, whichever direction you push the wheel, we highly recommend that the teeth of the blade be turning in a DOWN direction. Experiment first with scrap pieces similar to material that you are planning to use before tackling a major project. Begin using light pressure first in order to obtain desired results. A light colored wash will show effects immediately. As always, we recommend Doctor Bens Instant Age as a wash which will enhance the nail holes without filling in the grain of the wood. Doctor Bens Instant Age should also be used for the most realistic effects of weathering wood to appear sun bleached. If the surface is to be painted, paint the area first and then use the Doctor Bens Fine Scale Nail Hole Tool to prick up the paint, creating very realistic weathered nail holes. Please respond to the provided address with critiques and techniques that you have found useful while modeling with this product.
