"Traveling
the back roads years ago, one would happen across a tiny grocery store
around every other bend in the road or over the next rise. Even today, these
picturesque treasures can still be found. Wood siding deeply scarred by
grain and rot and weathered a beautiful silver gray. Rusted tin roofing
sheets all but covering the original wood shakes. Front porch sagging and
with a decided lean. And as though in staunch defiance to this earthly
appeal are a multitude of colorful metal signs plastered everywhere
advertising the contents of the interior: colas, soaps, cigarettes,
remedies, staples, and clothing." (Introduction from original 1980's
advertising in the NG&SL Gazette magazine)
This
version of The Grocery is a re-offering of
the very first O scale "Back Road" series. It is a very small store that Tom
Yorke felt captured the essence of the prototype beautifully. In the early
1900's my Grandmother's Father had a similar, small grocery store that also had
a room in the back that her Uncle, Doctor Green would see patients who come in
from the area of Two Egg, Florida also known as Allison, Florida. There was the
Allison Lumber Mill which employed many of the locals and when the lumber
business dried up in 1921, Great Grand Pa James Nichols literally move most of
the Two Egg population which consisted of about 300 of his immediate family
including Nana & her 11 brothers and sisters to St. Petersburg, Florida in
1922.
